What’s Your Style? Eclectic
An eclectic design is unique to every person, because it’s about putting your personality on a canvas. We can help you create a home that’s true to you.
Overview
Do you love too many different styles to ever commit to just one? Eclectic might be the way to go. Eclectic design style is all about sampling from different styles and bringing them together in a confident new remix.
It is not a free for all though – while it might seem like anything goes with this style, there is a method to the madness. Keep reading to see how you can pull this style off like a pro!
Layout
This style is all about mixing and matching, so don’t be afraid to let the dividing lines between rooms blue a little. The dining room can bleed into the kitchen and the master bedroom can tie into a home office.
When it comes to structure, any size goes but open-concept does to tend to make room overlap a little easier.
Materials
As for materials, focus on balance and layering. There is no rule that states you have to use fabrics or metals or leather only, so feel free to draw from different ones.
Try layering different rugs on top of one another. For example, pair a solid neutral with a bold floral pattern or a strong geometric with a faux sheepskin rug.
Surfaces
Like your materials, you’re not bound to one trend; you can go with glossy and matte finishes. If you love both, this style is perfect for you!
Eclectic style is a mosaic, so if after bringing in your favourite pieces and elements you find things are predominantly matte or textured, find a couple shiny pieces to add some dynamics.
Colours
You have a lot of freedom with the colours you choose, but like we said earlier, it’s not a free-for-all. Too many patterns, colours and designs can make things look like a mess. To avoid this, pick one or two of your must-have elements and let your other choices work off that.
A good idea to avoid any chaos in the design is to use a neutral, calm backdrop like plain white, off-whites, greys and pastel accent walls. A calm background helps to ground the more eccentric elements and prevent disorder.
Furniture/appliances/hardware
This is where you can have a lot of fun. No two chairs ever have to be alike but there should be a common theme. For instance, they can be a similar size, shape or colour; they just need some kind of unifying feature.
Mix and match elements like tables, couches, handles and lighting from all your favourite styles but pick a common element to tie it all together masterfully. A room full of circles or a kitchen that highlights angles. Pick a method to your madness.
Décor/finishing
The décor and finishing touches is where you stamp your personality. The whole point of eclectic style is being able to bring all the elements you love together without being bound by the stricter rules of just one style. Show off your family photos and travel souvenirs; eclectic is about showing off ‘you’.
Feature walls filled with art and décor are a big staple of the eclectic style. Use different sized and shaped frames with various art pieces and fit them together like a Tetris game for an eye-catching display. This acts as a great focal point for the room. Having a focal point is a good tip to keep in mind for this style, as it helps to focus your design decisions.
Don’t be afraid to experiment with bold items. Trial and error is not uncommon with this look. When it all comes together, an eclectic room should scream ‘this is me’!
