Traditional Kitchen with Updated Foyer

A modern, open concept layout was combined with traditional style to create this beautiful kitchen, living and entryway renovation in Caledon, Ontario.

Location: Caledon, ON
Date: 2017
Budget: $80,000
Style: Traditional

The Space:

The priority for this kitchen and main floor renovation was an open concept feel and ease of maintenance. Choosing specific materials and restructuring the walls, particularly with a flush-mount beam, were the biggest moves to achieve this goal.

The Renovation Plan:

To create the open concept space that the homeowners were looking for, we first took own the walls separating the kitchen and living area. We then closed off the entryway to create a traditional foyer entrance. Hand scraped oak floors, stained in a Cocoa finish, were carried throughout to emphasize the open concept look.

The island and cabinetry were custom made for the space. The advantage of custom builds is we can include features specific to your needs, like appliance storage, device inserts and storage for every layout. The island was designed to include a breakfast bar area that flared into the living room. We also included a spice and oil rack next to the stove; a great feature for storing what are usually cumbersome countertop or pantry items.

The main cabinets lining the walls were painted in Benjamin Moore Calm, while the island was painted with Benjamin Moore Chelsea Gray. Two-toned cabinet finishes are a popular trend in kitchen design right now, and these colour choices brought a warm, lively feel to the space. The colours also complemented the multi-toned aspect of the slate backsplash above the stove.

Additionally, the cabinets were accompanied by crown moulding, valance lighting and LED pot lights.

The Renovation Highlights

That same multi-toned tile theme used in the kitchen backsplash was carried over into the foyer, with slate flooring tiles serving as a major statement piece. It was a wealth of design riches in the foyer, with the custom coat rack, storage built-in and frosted-glass doors.
