What’s Your Style: Scandinavian Bedroom Design

We’ve talked about Scandinavian design in a broad sense before – and thought it would be interesting to see how this popular design approach can drill down to a specific room in your home.

While we tend to think of Scandinavian design in terms of living rooms, family rooms, rec rooms and other common areas, it’s also worth noting how this design approach can bring a sense of serenity and style to the one space you probably spend more time in than any other: the bedroom.

Here are a few examples of how style-savvy homeowners have brought a little bit of Scandinavia back to their bedrooms.

Natural. Light.

This beautiful room has Scandinavian style written all over it; abundant natural light and loads of bright white surfaces and textures, for a design effect that is simple, but not austere. The light-coloured wood floors add a subtle sense of warmth throughout.

Just add wood.

Here, natural wood elements like the floor-to-ceiling bed frame add interest to a room that might otherwise feel overly stark. Bright pops of colour, like the red pillows on the bed, serve to further enliven the space.

Open and airy.

Sometimes you just don’t have the space for a full bedroom. This small New York City apartment uses elements of Scandinavian design to help distinguish between the sleeping and living areas. The focal point is the light wood “wall”, which manages to both define the space and add a sense of openness to the apartment overall.

Cool warmth.

The low-slung, very contemporary custom bed is the centerpiece of this stunning Scandinavian-style bedroom. The warm varnished wood contrasts perfectly with cooler-coloured elements like the blinds, bedding and fireplace wall.

Texture is everything.

We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the importance of texture in Scandinavian design. In this bedroom, rumpled linens and bedding, stacks of pillows, along with (of course) warm natural wood, provide just the right foil for the sleek, contemporary, minimal feel of the space overall.
